    TOKiMONSTA is visionary music producer and DJ known for her unique textural soundscapes that fuses vintage sensibilities with progressive electronic/r&b/dance music. Tokimonsta made history in 2017 when she became the first female Asian-American producer to receive a Grammy nomination in the best dance/electronic album category for her 2017 album, “Lune Rouge.”

Outline

Build a new storefront for Eyedress' line of sought after and consistently sold out clothing, accessories, and skateboards which are designed in collaborations between he and other prominent creatives of the music and skate scene.

Concept Process

Eyedress is a long time collaborator, with this site being the 4th project we have worked on together. For the concept, I worked along his creative director to create a modern and minimal design that invokes the skate punk aesthetic of his current line of skate decks and apparel.

Creative development #

The page was intentionally designed to consistently keep a narrow width, to intentionally create a familiar feel for Eyedress fans who are used to his content on largely on mobile devices. In keeping with this concept, all menus and elements are contained within this constrained portrait layout.

The storefront site also includes Tour and Music sections for latest show dates and music releases.

Development process #

Developed fully with Shopify for ease of access for editing and sales managemt for the separate teams (Shopify Online Store 2.0 Liquid custom theme) with Shopify CLI 3.

Outline

Create a web experience for his latest project DRMVRSE, providing an interactive space for fans to find exclusive merch, tour information and his latest videos and music.

Concept Process

Aethyr Co designed and provided the flat mock up and assets. Seeing the flat design's intricate design gave me the idea to give it depth and bring it to life with animations. By separating each different parts of the design into separate images, I was able to place them on staggered layers which are either animated (like the clouds that float) or move on scroll (rest of the elements).

Creative development #

For the Music section in the landing home page, because he has a large collection of releases and there is a bit of a 2000’s vibe to the general design, had the idea of the nostalgic iTunes cover scroll as a great way to display his releases.

When navigating to the Music page, the releases are displayed in a grid. Tilt animations on hover were added to give more of a physical record feel to the page.

The navigation to the separate pages is pinned to each corner of the screen to make them always accessible without having to rely on a separatee drawer and keep the user immersed in the experience, incorporating into the layered concept of the design.

Development process #

Built on Shopify Online Store 2.0 (Shopify Liquid custom theme) with Shopify CLI 3 to be able to include product collection grid directly on landing page and give client access to editable sections using Shopify’s CMS.

Outline

To develop a one of a kind shop design with interactive elements the Pleasures founders could use to share their creative commentary and that customers can play with, while still prioritizing an optimal shopping experience.

Client

Pleasures is a streetwear brand based in Los Angeles, co-founded by Alex James and Vlad Elkin in 2015. They draw inspiration from the artists, scenes, and styles that revolved around the music they grew up listening to. Their work is consistently thoughtful, often controversial, and always imbued with a sense of fun.

Concept Process

The founders' and myself share a love and nostalgia for music, art, and design from the counter culture punk and rave scenes of the late '90s. My aim was to capture this nostalgia and incorporate visually. This was the era I got into computers, and at the time I was drawn to the cyberpunk aesthetic. This further inspired my design when I started exploring the idea of a vintage computer terminal OS interface. I wanted to elevate this vision into its future, of current time, by making the computer OS interface sleek and modern. Originally created in 2019 and redesigned in 2023 to grow with the brand's expanse requirements.

Creative development #

My goal was to add a compelling interactive feature for customers on landing that would also enable options for the founders and team to add their unique taste and humor, change up the vibe, highlight new collections, or announce new drops. This includes the ability to customize not only the background but also all other parts of this feature. By designing a ‘desktop’ interface feature, I added windows for which they can customize both images and text, along with buttons for links. These are interactive, users can resize and move them around for fun. The background of this ‘desktop’ interface can also be changed. With more than half of their users on mobile, it was imperative that the design was consistent on both desktop and mobile.

The product grid also has a series of custom backgrounds that the client can update the colors to match their collection. These backgrounds are usually generative animations, like this lava lamp.

Outline

The goal was to create a high fashion online space to showcase their teams carefully created content. August’s unique retail space captures the reverence of the brands they offer, which I wanted to incorporate into their online space.

Client

Concept Process

I wanted to bring the polished atmosphere of their in person retail experience into their online shop by creating a similar minimal aesthetic with carefully designed micro-interactions in key elements. I researched their many of their international counterparts like Dover Street Market or Slam Jam to provide an online shop that stands out.

Within two quarters, their online store surpassed its in-store sales, leading to an impressive 157% monthly revenue increase.

Creative development #

Every detail has been meticulously designed, from page transitions to custom cursor micro-interactions that help guide the user through the site.

Elements like a custom “featured brands” section allows them to periodically update and feature their creative team's beautifully shot campaigns of brands and products.

To meet the demands of their ever changing merchandising needs with function and efficiency as top priorities, all of the sections were designed to be fully customized, moved and resized as needed.

With an extensive catalogue and with user conversion in mind, I added interactive elements to the product grid, offering engaging way to see product availability with selection and add to cart directly on grid, and filters that are always visible that allow for users to refine their shopping experience.

To create a unique and innovative to elevate Tokimonsta's album cover from a two-dimensional design of 3D elements into an immersive 3D space.

Concept Process

For her latest album cover, “Oasis Nocturno”, Tokimonsta collaborated with internationally renowned artist Frederic Duquette aka FVCKRENDER, a pioneer in the digital art and NFT space.

Leveraging my experience with WebGL/Three.js, this was a great opportunity to collaborate with Frederic and transform his static artwork into a to a more experiential and interactive 3D environment.

Creative development #

I had Frederic share his 3D objects used to design the cover. With performance in mind, I had to decimate his highly detailed 3D models to reduce their size and ensure the site could still run optimally for fans across the world as WebGL sites can sometimes be resource intensive.

From there I designed a custom skybox scene for the background by modifying photos used for the cover provided by the client to create this alien planet landscape.

I intentionally made the interactions on zoom and pan so they would work seamlessly on desktop and mobile

To keep the scene animated even without any interaction, I created animations by separating the hands and the gem into individual objects so that the gem could rotate independently on its own axis and refract the environment like real glass. I gave the hands a metallic finish so that they can also reflect the lights around them. I added floating particle light globes for additional depth and animation.

While achieving a visionally impressive site, it still needed to be functional. I placed the rest of the site content in modals to keep the scene in the background while still presenting key content in a way that aligns with the 3D aspect of the design.

Built with Three.js, using OrbitControls for the camera, multiple loaders for the objects and textures, and UnrealBloomPass to add a more realistic bloom to the light effects.

Create a playful online space to engage fans with novel ways to discover and interact with music, by exploring beyond genres and think of music as moods or spaces.

Their live shows offer an intimate escape, allowing artists to explore vulnerability and new directions, free from distractions. Each release and show is unique, with a tailored content strategy.

Concept Process

OFFAIR had created a collection of playlists based on times of the day like "evening", or moods like "relax" combined with several genres of music including piano, electronic, lo-fi, or environments like nature and noise.

This presented the idea to build a playlist generator widget for fans to select their respective spatial or mental spaces and then select one of the genres or environments and get their generated playlist link.

The playlist generator and the headline changing animations in the page were built with JS + jQuery.

Creative development #

The client wanted the page to feel alive and organic, and to bring that vibe I incorporated the shapes that change in size and other textures to the page. For the header shape animations, I used d3.js and GSAP

They requested spaces for their record releases and show experiences, where they could both announce and showcase each.

Full website experience for OffAir Because these sections need to be updated and maintained periodically, the client requested a simple and minimal content management system that was not Wordpress.

I incorporated Decap, an open-source React headless CMS that allows content to be stored and versioned on GitHub.

Outline

Design a UI frontend that highlights the uniqueness of HypeHub's features, with dazzling colors and graphics to illuminate a tried and true social media layout chosen to instill a sense of familiarity along with the novelty.

Concept Process

In order to present HypeHub as an one of a kind platform in this space, I looked into their industry landscape and researched into direct competitors as well as some of the site the creators and users frequent for the specific adult content culture. The key aspect is the ability to search their database of creators, something novel and uncommon in their industry.

Extensive research uncovered some insights about the subscription adult content industry having an archetypical style and narrow color aestethic, the use of mainly pinks and sometimes pastel blues, typically against white, for many of the sites surveyed. I saw this as an opportunity to use color as a way to convey to figuratively the uniqueness of the features that HypeHub offers that make it stand out from competitors and the industry at large. The color palette was created by channeling the most bubbly and energetic quality of recognizable social media brands, remixing them by finding hues that truly stood out against the carefully chosen dark core color that contrasts like a pop of neon.

Creative development #

The UI was designed to feel consistent with major related platforms but with a modern twist to not only attract new creators to join their community but also provide a level of familiarity to retain them, while presenting the novel interactions for creators, like "Boosts" and other tools to promote their content in a way that it would appeal to the users that are fans of the creators, as well as other unique features that help these users discover new creators.

I leveraged my experience with Php and backend technologies to help inform and implement the design into fully working web app, using Vue.js to build the UX frontend and Tailwind css to style it. Tailwind was chosen to offer flexibility in customization and maintenance for the HypeHub in house dev team.

Concept Process

LetsNot.Fail was born during the pandemic times of social unrest when, like everyone else, I started to read and research about ways to contribute not just by voting, but also educating myself, donate and find other meaningful ways to make a difference. I found the amout of resources to be overwhelming, and felt like other people out there probably wish they could do more but they wouldn't know where to start. In a time where people had dozens of links in their link in bio, I thought, why not, just make a site with a collection of links, organize it by types of actions, and provide a "pick one for me" button for each action, to redeuce the barrier to entry for those who want to do something, but are also overwhelmed and don't know where to start.

Creative development #

As a developer, I felt like using one of the link in bio platforms, while valid for others, didn't make sense for me, because while functional, I felt like it didn't provide a way to organize and present the information in the most compelling way. I wanted to go a step above the basic link in bio and make it a collection with organized sections per type of action, and include small descriptions of each resource to help users understand more in detail the resources links.

As someone who learns visually and loves podcasts and audiobooks, I wanted to provide a variety of resources which included film, tv, videos, audiobooks and podcasts to learn more, additionally to the traditional donation sites, books and articles.

I also wanted to provide a section for parents to have the conversation with their little ones, for those who were interested in approaching the conversation in a time where kids were stuck remote learning at home.
